Sound-based Composition and Organ in the late 20th Century Music: Elective Affinities?
Starting from some technical reflections related to the two versions of Volumina of 1962 and 1966 by György Ligeti, we will try to identify which are the compositional aspects of contemporary writing for the organ that cannot ignore the detailed knowledge of the instrument. Examples from some of the more recent scores – written for different European Organs – will be presented to stimulate discussion on aspects inherent especially in the composition of the complex sounds through the various techniques that contemplate the performance on the keyboards, the pedalboard, the bellows, and the engine.
Biography
Ingrid Pustijanac is Associate Professor at the University of Pavia, Department of Musicology and Cultural Heritage in Cremona. Her writings include a book on György Ligeti and articles about the late 20th century music with special attention to the spectral music, sound studies, improvisation, and mixed music from the perspective of sketch studies and analysis of compositional processes. Graduated in Composition and Conducting, she has conducted the Department of Musicology and Cultural Heritage in Cremona Choir from 2002 to 2013.
